St Mary’s Diocesan School enters the BT young scientist competition every year. All year groups are welcome to enter, either as a group of two or three or individually.
There are four different categories that the project can enter, biological and ecological sciences, chemical, physical and mathematical sciences, social and behavioural sciences and Technology. The closing date for entries is early September so anyone interested must contact Miss Caine at the beginning of the new school year.
We have had great success in the last couple years, in 2016 we won 3rd place in the junior biological and ecological group and in 2019 we also won 3rd place in the intermediate biological and ecological group.
On Tuesday 22nd October 2019 Seb Lennon and Calum Agnew, 5th years in St. Mary’s Diocesan School, attended the National Concert Hall to receive their award for second place in the 2019 John Hooper Medal for Statistics Poster Competition.
The lads came second in a national competition for their project “Does your sense of smell have a correlation with the strength of your Short-Term and Long-Term memory.” They found that there is in fact a correlation between one’s short-term memory and their sense of smell.
Their project came third place in BT Young Scientist and due to the large number of statistics present in the project it was decided that the poster should be entered into the competition. They presented the project and their findings in front of a large crowd and are delighted with their achievement.”
All projects who enter the school science fair also compete in the Scifest competition. We have had great success in this competition in past years.
This event takes place every May and is open to all students from all year groups. the student can take part in groups or individually. They create a project with the help of teachers and peers. This project is then displayed in the school library where the junior year groups come to view them. There is a prize for 1st and 2nd.
